First found in Lancashire where they
were seated from very ancient times,
some say well before the Norman Conquest
and the arrival of Duke William at
Hastings in 1066 A.D.
Some of the first settlers of this name
or some of its variants were: Abraham
Dowthwaite who settled in Charleston
S.C. in 1796 with his brother Robert;
William Douthwaite arrived in
Philadelphia in 1803; James Douthwrait
settled in Barnstable Mass.
Relationship:
My 4th
Great Grandfather Stephen Riddle
(1730-1807) married Elizabeth Douthit
(1739-1790). Elizabeth was Sarah
Richardson Douthit's GrandAunt. That
would may her my 2nd cousin 4 times
removed.
